Help for flood-affected South Australian communities

The Australian and South Australian governments will provide disaster assistance in nine South Australian local government areas (LGAs), as increasing Murray River flooding affects large parts of South Australia.

The assistance for individuals and families will be available through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) for the flood event that started on 15 November 2022.

Flood support extended to more New South Wales communities

Joint media release with the Hon Bill Shorten MP and the Hon Steph Cooke MP Federal and State government assistance is now available in another five New South Wales local government areas (LGA) affected by the ongoing flooding. The LGAs are Eurobodalla, Inverell, Orange, Queanbeyan-Palerang and Wentworth.

Disaster assistance extended for Southern Queensland following severe storms and floods

Disaster assistance has been extended to the Goondiwindi Regional Council and Gold Coast City Council following severe storms in late October that have seen major flooding continue into November.

Assistance for counter disaster operations for both these councils and assistance to repair roads and other essential public infrastructure in Goondiwindi, is being provided through the jointly-funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements. 

More assistance for flood-impacted primary producers

There is now additional support for flood-affected primary producers in NSW, as part of the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Recovery grants to help with the immediate clean-up and recovery costs and to repair extensive damage have been increased from $25,000 to up to $75,000 for primary producers. Rural landholders can now also apply for grants of up to $10,000.

$20 million in betterment projects for remote and regional Queensland

Queensland’s remote and regional communities will be able to build disaster-damaged public assets from the 2020-21 disaster season back to a better standard after they shared in $20 million in Betterment funding.

A total of 39 projects have been approved across 21 councils, including nine Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander councils through the $20 million Betterment Fund, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.

To prepare for bushfires, just reach for your phone

The Bushfire Resilience Star Rating App will soon be a tool for all Australians to understand the bushfire risk of their home and make the appropriate preparations.

The project, funded by the Australian Government Disaster Risk Reduction Package, brings science and evidence together in a tool for householders to identify bushfire hazards around the home and plan ways to mitigate their risk and improve the survivability of their homes.

The Bushfire Resilience Star Rating App was recently piloted with the Shoalhaven community, who were severely impacted by the Black Summer bushfires in the summer of 2019.

About this project

Who: Funding was awarded to Bushfire Building Council of Australia. The Bushfire Resilience Star Rating App has been piloted with the Shoalhaven community, in conjunction with Shoalhaven City Council, NSW.

What: The Bushfire Resilience Star Rating App is for all Australians to understand and prepare for the bushfire risk of their home. The app assesses your site-specific risk and measures the vulnerability of your home. The app provides you with a list of evidence-based, tailored actions to adapt your home and improve your resilience rating.

Program funding: Disaster Risk Reduction Package

Funding received: $3,000,000

Benefits delivered: This project will improve the resilience and preparedness of communities to identify bushfire hazards around the home and plan ways to mitigate the risk of future bushfires.

Federal disaster support for more flood impacted NSW communities

As severe storms and flooding continue to impact large areas of New South Wales, the Australian Government has extended financial disaster assistance to more people in the state.

The Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) is now available to eligible people in an additional ​4 local government areas (LGAs), bringing the total number of New South Wales LGAs receiving Commonwealth support for this event to 70.

The new LGAs are Bathurst, Oberon, Shellharbour, and Uralla.
