Cheaper airfares to bring more holidayers to Queensland

Virgin Australia, in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland, has released more than 300,000 sale fares - to Queensland destinations like Cairns, Hamilton Island, Townsville and more​. The initiative is partly supported by the $5 million Tourism Recovery Package following ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper, jointly funded by the Albanese and Miles Governments.

Primary producers in 15 Local Government Areas can now apply for low-interest loans of up to $250,000 to help them on the road to recovery following Tropical Cyclone Kirrily.

This assistance is being provided by the Albanese and Miles Governments through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), with 32 local governments now activated for funding in response to Kirrily.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) of $1,000 for eligible adults and $400 for eligible children will soon be available for more communities significantly impacted by severe weather events in Queensland.

People who suffered serious damage or injury as a result of heavy rainfall and flooding at the end of January 2024 in the suburb of Bray Park within the City of Moreton Bay Local Government Area (LGA) will be able to apply from 2pm Wednesday 14 February.

Far North Queensland’s Palmerston Highway reopens ahead of schedule

The Tablelands region’s Palmerston Highway has today reopened to all traffic, including heavy vehicles. 

The highway suffered significant landslips and pavement failures as a result of record rainfall associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper. 

The urgent works to open a single lane were jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and have been completed ahead of time.

The Australian Government has today released public submissions for the Alternative Commonwealth Capabilities for Crisis Response Discussion Paper.

The Government is considering how to enhance the Commonwealth’s capabilities and national capacity to ensure Australia is prepared to face the increasing number of frequent and severe natural disasters due to climate change.

Another 11 Queensland councils can now access disaster support after ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily caused heavy rain and flooding across large parts of Queensland.

Councils can access jointly funded Commonwealth-State assistance to help with the costs of counter disaster operations such as sandbagging and debris removal, and the reconstruction of essential public assets like roads and bridges.

$92M invested in North Queensland recovery and resilience

The Australian Government will invest a further $91.8 million in disaster recovery and resilience for northern, Far North and north-west Queensland communities to help with the long-term needs of some of the most remote disaster-prone parts of the state. Three new initiatives will support eligible communities and primary producers to recover from significant monsoonal flooding experienced over a number of years, and will strengthen the region to future severe weather events.

Just over a year on from the peak of the River Murray floods – one of the most damaging natural disasters in South Australia’s history – the benefits from a range of assistance packages continue to play an important role in the recovery efforts.

The Australian and State Governments have provided significant support to flood affected communities under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA), helping those communities to rebuild post the flood.
