Protecting our communities

We’re working with communities to improve resilience and disaster readiness.

We're doing this through the Protecting Our Communities (Disaster Resilience) Program (POC).

In 2022, the Australian Government committed $34.4 million to deliver 27 projects that communities identified for their local area.

Program objectives

The project aims to:

1. Increase disaster resilience by improving:

  • telecommunications infrastructure
  • road infrastructure
  • evacuation centres
  • cyclone shelters
  • emergency management precincts

2. Improve community preparedness with:

  • volunteer training
  • disaster management plans.

3. Improve response to disasters, with the help of equipment such as water tankers.

Project delivery

There are 2 parts to the program.

We administer part 1. State and territory governments administer part 2. Find out more about the schedules.

Project start dates and milestones vary. By 30 June 2026, all projects will be complete. All funding available under the POC program has been allocated.

To find out more about the program, email RegionalPrograms@nema.gov.au.
