National Situation Room

The National Situation Room (NSR) is a 24/7 facility run by us. It provides whole-of-government all-hazards monitoring and reporting. Stakeholders use information provided for decision support before, during and after crises.

The focus of the NSR is primarily on domestic events. We monitor and report on international events that affect Australia or its interests.

We have close relationships with stakeholders from:

  • Australian Government
  • States and Territories
  • Industry and Non-Government Organisations.

We also work closely with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and Geoscience in the NSR. This is to support information sharing and collaborative outcomes.

The NSR is made up of different teams. They support crisis management functions such as:

  • information monitoring,
  • analysis and,
  • planning of crisis response.

These teams include the NSR Operations teams, the Crisis Intelligence team and the Crisis Planning team. This is also the location of the Crisis Coordination Team (CCT) if a crisis is occurring.

Crisis Intelligence Team

Our Crisis Intelligence team supports informed decision-making through gathering and analysing information.

This helps inform impact and consequence analysis. In turn, this delivers decision support intelligence products. These make sure our decisions and approach are informed and evidence driven.

Crisis Intelligence provides information about environmental and space weather hazards under the all-hazards Australian Government Crisis Management Framework.

Crisis Coordination Team

If there’s a significant crisis, we can set up a CCT to bring together Australian Government actions. The CCT can be staffed from NEMA and other Australian Government agencies, and key stakeholders helping with the response.

The CCT is in line with the purpose set by the National Coordination Mechanism and employs the Crisis Appreciation and Strategic Planning (CASP) method.

Together they support strategic planning activities and decision support products. If National Plans are activated, they enable coordination of Australian Government non-financial assistance.

The National Joint Common Operating Picture

The National Joint Common Operating Picture (NJCOP) is managed from the NSR. The NJCOP is a mapping tool. It provides, all-hazards situational awareness and impact related information.

This is achieved by displaying a range of data feeds including:

  • Emergency warnings
  • Current weather events
  • Government assistance
  • Infrastructure and demographics from agencies including:
    • BOM
    • The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)
    • Geoscience Australia.

New data layers are consistently being added to the NJCOP. The data is available to all our emergency management stakeholders, including state and territory emergency management agencies

The National Security Hotline (NSH)

The National Security Hotline (NSH) is also managed from within the NSR. It’s a place you can report concerns about possible signs of terrorism and foreign interference in our community 24/7 by:
