What is a resource?
A resource provides information on measures that can improve the resilience of households during a disaster or adverse weather event.
Strengthen your house to Weather the Storm
This website provides guides for homeowners. They provide information to retrofit and maintain houses to be more resilient to tropical cyclones and storms.
It includes three levels:
- general maintenance
- window and door protection
- roof tie-down retrofits for various house types. These include timber frame, brick veneer, and double brick, with different roof pitches.
The website also provides information on:
- wind forces on houses
- the types of damage that wind can cause
- the importance of the tie-down chain. It secures the roofing to the roof structure through the walls and down to the ground.
It was developed by:
- the Cyclone Testing Station at James Cook University
- Geoscience Australia
- the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC.
