Preparing for tropical cyclones in Southeast Queensland
Find out how the the South West Hazard Assessment for Queensland (SWHA-Q) Project can help you.
A partnership between local governments and organisations was formed. The partnership investigated the nature of severe wind risk in SEQ. They included:
- 6 coastal local government areas along Queensland’s coastline:
- Noosa
- Sunshine Coast
- Moreton Bay,
- Brisbane
- Redland
- Gold Coast
- the Queensland Government (Queensland Fire and Emergency Services)
- Department of Energy and Public Works
- Department of Environment and Science
- Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning
- Queensland Reconstruction Authority
- the insurance sector (Insurance Council of Australia, Insurance Australia Group, and Suncorp.)
The project was completed by the James Cook University Cyclone Testing Station and the University of Queensland. Geoscience Australia led it. The team analysed the:
- wind risk
- options to reduce the risk and,
- the cost-benefit for different housing types.
Participants used different scenarios to look at potential damage. They also looked at the emergency responses required.
