What is a resource?
A resource provides information on measures that can improve the resilience of households during a disaster or adverse weather event.
Build to Last – A Protecting the North Initiative
Provides information on the benefit-cost ratio and insurance implications for damage reduction strategies during tropical cyclones.
This article presents the findings from a research project. It outlines Suncorp's initiatives to help homeowners lower their insurance premiums.
The study found that:
- Upgrading the tie-down connections in roofs of houses built before 1980 pays for themselves after one cyclone
- bracing roller doors for $300 could save between $1,500 and $10,000
- DIY window protection for around $1360 can reduce claims cost by up to $15,000
Common minor claims were for:
- fences
- shade cloth or shade sail structures,
- loose items in the garden
Damage to flooring and internal linings from wind-driven rain that enters a house can be easily prevented.
The only way to reduce North Queensland’s premiums in a permanent and sustainable way is to reduce the risk of damage from cyclones. This needs increased Government and private investment in protecting the community.
