Information and resources

At NEMA, we help people understand disaster risk and make better choices.

We do this in support of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Framework.

Here are some materials that explain our approach.

Guidance for strategic decisions on climate and disaster risk

This guidance helps governments, businesses and people understand many aspects of climate change. For example:

  • the physical impact of climate change
  • how to cope with uncertainty, including long-term planning and investments.

Profiling Australia's Vulnerability Report

This report recognises that old ways of measuring risk no longer work. The world is too complex and ambiguous.

It discusses how:

  • interconnected systems affect risk
  • our values influence decisions
  • we can reduce vulnerability and build resilience with sustained action.

We createdthe report with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation.

Australian Disaster Resilience Knowledge Hub

The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR) manages the Knowledge Hub.

The hub:

  • highlights key issues in the resilience sector
  • encourages people to share ideas and work together.

It also includes a collection of handbooks on resilience.

Included is our Systemic Disaster Risk Handbook. We created it with AIDR. It offers accessible ways to reduce disaster risk.

National disaster risk information services capability pilot

This pilot project looks for better ways to understand and manage disasters.

It focuses on better accountability, investments and governance.

In 2020, we completed a trial in the supply chain and freight sector.

The findings helped design the Australian Climate Service, our key partner.
