Tasmania is known for its pristine landscapes and growing urban population. It also faces increasing threats due to the frequency and intensity of disasters. Geoneon’s 2024 Greater Hobart Bushfire Exposure Index comes at a critical time. It offers new insights into the risks faced by Tasmanian communities.

Geoneon is a Tasmania-based company. It uses data fusion to map climate risk. Geoneon have developed the 2024 Bushfire Community Risk Index for the Greater Hobart area. The Index will help prepare the Greater Hobart community before, during and after bushfire season.

Harnessing technology to prepare communities

The Index is funded under the Preparing Australian Communities Program – Local. The project provides data on bushfire exposure in real time. This helps to identify areas vulnerable to bushfires. Greater Hobart communities can use this information and take preventative actions to reduce their risk.

The Index has assessed how exposed 94,000 buildings are to bushfires across 132 suburbs of Hobart. It categorises them according to their level of bushfire exposure. Access to real time data strengthens the preparedness of communities, local governments and residents. It gives critical insights and fostering a culture of resilience with the ability to take proactive steps in preparing for future hazards.

The benefit to the community

Communities in Greater Hobart benefit from this project by:

  • Increased access to critical information
  • Increased community resilience by providing actionable information, and showing changes in exposure levels after education
  • Increased local awareness and discussion to work towards collective community action
  • Information that supports the importance of prioritising risk reduction efforts

The Greater Hobart Bushfire Exposure Index fosters a culture of preparedness and resilience. It equips communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate the challenges posed by an ever-changing climate. By prioritising these aspects, Tasmania can ensure a safer, more sustainable future for all its residents.
