$64 million for priority riparian repair work

Waterways and estuaries including creeks, rivers and wetlands impacted by last year’s floods will be regenerated and protected from future disasters through a Riparian Stabilisation Package.

The $64 million package from the Albanese and Minns Governments targets riparian land that pose a significant threat to public safety, assets and the environment due to damage caused by flooding in early 2022 (AGRN 1012).

Flood repair roadworks underway in the Western Downs

Flood recovery works spanning over 1800 kilometres of roads have begun in the Western Downs, delivered by Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Funding for the works is being jointly provided by the Albanese and Palaszczuk Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, (DRFA).

Works will repair damage caused by heavy rainfall events between November 2021 and May 2022, and will be delivered over the next 15 months.

Disaster assistance following Bega Valley bushfires

Disaster assistance will be made available in the Bega Valley Shire Local Government Area (LGA) following severe bushfires on 3 October 2023.

Assistance is being provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Federal Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt said the bushfire across the Bega Valley area caused significant damage. 

Taskforce to drive high tech communications for first responders

Australia’s first responders are now one step closer to improved communications during an emergency, following the establishment of the Public Safety Mobile Broadband (PSMB) Taskforce.

The announcement of the Taskforce comes ahead of the National Bushfire Summit, being held in Canberra today (Monday).

The PSMB Taskforce will be responsible for laying the groundwork for the long-term public safety communications infrastructure, prioritising the partnerships with state and territory governments to ensure they have a voice in its design.

National disaster preparedness summit launches in Canberra

Australia’s first National Disaster Preparedness Summit will get underway in Canberra today, as the country gears up for hot, dry spring and summer seasons. 

The Prime Minister and the Minister for Emergency Management will join around 250 crisis management, response and recovery specialists from governments, industry, community and the not-for-profit sector who are attending the two-day event convened by the Government’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on September 25-26.
