Coastal Estuarine Western Australia

$50 million for coastal and estuarine resilience

The Australian Government is building the resilience of communities and economies against the risks and impacts of disasters.

Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program

The Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program will provide $50 million in funding to jurisdictions to target projects such as blue, grey and green infrastructure, storm surge and tidal barrages in Estuarine, building the capacity of coastal land use planners, and improving community awareness of coastal hazards. It will help address the growing cost nationally of coastal hazards management and adaptation.

Given that one in two Australians live within seven kilometres of the coast and are potentially exposed to coastal storm surge, flooding, and associated coastal inundation, this is a really important investment as we continue to see an increase in severe weather events. The program comes off the back of recommendations from the Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements, which highlighted the need to mitigate risks to low lying coastal communities due to predicted sea level rises and more regular and intense storm surges. This investment builds on funding provided under the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Programs 20-21 and 21-22 and will help drive long-term resilience and sustainability by delivering priority projects that mitigate the impact of disasters on communities and economies in and around coastal and estuarine areas.

In addition to these initiatives, the Australian Government’s investment in resilience, risk reduction and preparedness includes:

  • $150 million Preparing Australian Communities – Local Stream Program.
  • $4.5 million National Capability Package.
  • $37.1 million Strengthening Telecommunications Against Natural Disasters (STAND) package to improve the resilience of Australia’s communications networks in bushfire and disaster prone areas program funded under the $2 billion National Bushfire Recovery Fund and the Mobile Black Spot Program.
  • $85 million Natural Hazards Research Australia, a natural hazards and disaster resilience research centre for the next ten years.
  • $200 million Infrastructure Betterment Fund in New South Wales, jointly funded with the NSW Government, with $100 million from the Australian Government.
  • $261 million Disaster Risk Reduction Package, jointly funded with jurisdictions, with $130.5 million from the Australian Government.

The Coastal and Estuarine Risk Mitigation Program will drive long-term resilience and sustainability by delivering priority projects that mitigate the impact of disasters on communities and economies.

As Australia’s National Emergency Management agency, we are excited about this program, and look forward to sharing the impacts it has on communities as the projects roll out. More information about the program, and the full list of projects.
